Teaching Using Web 2.0 Digital Tools and Applications
Description
Participants will receive a brief introduction to a variety of free Web 2.0 resources freely available on the web. The main emphasis of the workshop will be an inquiry based activity in which participants will work in grade level groups to explore and discuss the uses of various Web 2.0 tools for teaching. Each group will create a lesson plan that uses one tool to engage students in learning science. This workshop is designed to be interactive and collaborative. Participants will use a wiki site to share their ideas with the group online. A computer with wireless access is required.
Rationale
Web 2.0, the read/write web, offers a variety of tools which can be used to actively engage students in their learning of science. Web 2.0 tools are freely available online and can be made public or private in order to protect the safety of students. Teachers can use these resources to create engaging lessons that challenge their students and make their lessons interactive and available at school, home, or anywhere that has internet access. The workshop design and delivery will model an inquiry based, collaborative approach to facilitated learning that uses one of these tools for collaborative learning and sharing of ideas.
Methods
The workshop will model an inquiry based approach to learning for the participants. A presentation will be used to organize and structure the workshop. An online wiki will be used by participants to share their ideas during and after the workshop. The wiki will also contain the presentation and links to online resources which teachers can access after the workshop. Participants will explore and use online resources during the presentation. (A computer with wireless access will be required for participation in the workshop.) Collaborative group work will be used to promote inquiry.
An authentic product will be created during the session that can be used by teachers with their students. Participants will also have access to the products of the other groups through the online wiki.
