Description

The Next Generation Science Standards offer teachers freedom to design their own curriculum, while providing a sold basis for what students should know and be able to do in the sciences. While they have not been formally adopted as part of the NH College and Career Ready Standards, many schools and science teachers are looking at the Next Generation Science Standards as a way to support teaching the Common Core State Standards. In this workshop, you will explore the connections between the Common Core and Next Generation Science in terms of the fewer, higher, deeper philosophy, and the teaching strategies that support deeper teaching and learning. You will collaborate to unpack a standard, address it’s component parts, and discuss strategies for teaching the standard. As you explore the subtle shifts required for teaching these standards, you will also gain a better understanding of the strategies needed to teach the Common Core, as both sets of standards reinforce the teaching strategies needed. As you think about a backward designed lesson you will also be considering assessment strategies that support next generation learning. You are encouraged to bring a laptop with wireless connectivity to access online resources, but it is not a requirement for participation.

Reviewers evaluated science standards for every state for this report and their findings were deeply troubling: The majority of states earned Ds or Fs for their standards in this crucial subject, with only six jurisdictions receiving As.
