Creating Engaging and Interactive Science Activities Using Internet Resources

Description

Participants will receive a brief introduction to a variety of science learning sites freely available on the web. The main emphasis of the workshop will be an inquiry based activity in which participants will work in grade level groups to explore and discuss the uses of these interactive sites for teaching.  Each group will create a lesson plan that integrates use of the site to engage students in learning science.  This workshop is designed to be interactive and collaborative.  Participants will use a wiki site to share their ideas with the group online.  A computer with wireless access is required.

Rationale

The teaching of science often involves complicated concepts that are often difficult to simulate or explain using normal teacher delivery instructional models.  The web has many freely available sites full of rich science content that are designed to facilitate learning of difficult concepts in science.  These resources engage students in the learning of these difficult science concepts by offering clear visual and spatial graphics, many of which are interactive.  Interactive tutorials, videos, and online activities provide an opportunity for teachers to incorporate inquiry based, active learning into their lessons and help all students learn science.  The workshop delivery will model an inquiry based, collaborative approach to facilitated learning.

Methods

The workshop will model an inquiry based approach to learning for the participants.  A presentation will be used to organize and structure the workshop.  An online wiki will be used by participants to share their ideas during and after the workshop.  The wiki will also contain the presentation and links to online resources which teachers can access after the workshop. Participants will explore and use online resources during the presentation. (A computer with wireless access will be required for participation in the workshop.)  Collaborative group work will be used to promote inquiry.  An authentic product will be created during the session that can be used by teachers with their students.  Participants will also have access to the products of the other groups through the online wiki.
